What is Tinnitus? / Why Are My Ears Ringing?

What is Tinnitus? Why are my ears ringing?
Tinnitus ("TIN-a-tus" or "Tin-EYE-tus") is commonly described as "ringing in the ears".

It is defined as the perception of sound in the head when no external sound is present.

In addition to "ringing," head noises have been described as hissing, roaring, pulsing, whooshing, chirping, whistling and clicking.

Ringing and head noises can occur in one ear or both ears, and can be perceived to be occurring inside or outside the ear. It can accompany hearing loss or exist independent of hearing loss.

If you are experiencing Tinnitus, you should schedule an appointment to speak with an audiologist to learn about breakthrough treatments currently available.

Should I See an Audiologist?

Many times hearing loss goes undetected for years before being diagnosed and properly treated.

You can take a short hearing self-test and answer a few questions to see if you currently experience any conditions that are indications of hearing loss.

The best way to determine if you are experiencing any hearing loss is to have your hearing tested by an ASHA certified audiologist.
