Jan came to Tennessee from Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, to attend Maryville College, where she graduated with a degree in Political Science.

After graduating, she worked in Germany for two years for the American National Red Cross.

She returned to Tennessee where she was active in Maryville College Blount County chapter alumni activities. She served on the national Alumni Board for several terms, completing a term as President of the board in 1999. This led to her representing the Alumni Board for a term on the Maryville College Board of Directors.Jan completed a M.A. in Audiology at the University of Tennessee in 1981.

She worked for the Oak Ridge ENT group from 1980 to 1984 as a staff audiologist. She completed a Clinical Fellowship Year under the supervision of Dr. Robert Moore in 1985. She served as director of Speech and Hearing Services and Director of Children’s Special Services for the East Tennessee Regional Public Health Department. She joined the clinical faculty at the University of Tennessee Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology in 1991 and served as a Clinical Supervisor in Pediatric Audiology until she was promoted to Audiology Clinic Director.

She was awarded the first clinical doctorate in audiology, the AuD, at UT. She retired from UT in June, 2005.At the University, Dr. Dungan taught graduate courses in amplification. She guest lectured in many classes on the graduate and undergraduate level and developed clinic protocols in service coordination, real ear probe microphone measures, ear mold technology, multi-disciplinary infant speech and hearing clinics, and toddler speech and hearing diagnostic clinics. She has presented many guest lectures in the community about hearing loss, hearing conservation, new technology in hearing aids and FM systems, and Tinnitus and Hyperacusis management.

Dr. Dungan is married to Attorney Charles Dungan. They have a blended family with four daughters: Susan Eby, Carrie Mills, Stephanie Ebuna and Elizabeth Crosby. These four women have graced the family with four multi-talented and hilarious grandchildren and extraordinary sons-in-law of various talents, each essential to the greater good of the world and the family.
