Inner Ear Hair Cell Regeneration Trials

Most hearing loss is caused by damage to the hair cells within the inner ear or cochlea. When these cells are damaged, they do not regenerate. But when we look to nature, some species exist that are able to regenerate this type of cell. Innovative research is attempting to see if we can learn how to apply this to hearing cells in mammals.

With approaches including gene editing, drug therapies, these techniques are seeking to actually reverse sensorineural hearing loss. This is an exciting field to watch, but all of these types of treatment are still under development and nothing has yet been brought to market.

I’m sure there will be more coming soon…
